Windshield Replacement in Dunn, NC

If you drive I-95 between Fayetteville and Dunn, you have been driving through a work zone for years. NCDOT is widening the interstate from four lanes to eight over 26 miles, from Murphy Road (Exit 55) in Cumberland County to the I-40 junction (Exit 81) in Johnston County. That stretch runs right past Wade, Godwin and Dunn, and work zones bring lane shifts, rough edges and loose stone. Impex Auto Glass replaces windshields in Dunn, Erwin, Wade and Godwin, at the place the vehicle is parked.

Dunn, Erwin, Wade and Godwin

  • Wade. Just north of Fayetteville in Cumberland County, near the south end of the widening.
  • Godwin. A small Cumberland County town a few miles further up I-95.
  • Dunn. The largest town on this stretch, in Harnett County, on I-95 and US 421.
  • Erwin. A few miles northwest of Dunn along US 421, also in Harnett County.

Most people on this stretch use I-95 for the run into Fayetteville or up toward Raleigh and the I-40 junction, and US 421 between Dunn and Erwin. Those are the roads where a windshield picks up most of its chips, and they are the roads a technician uses to reach you.

Stones, loads and the widening

North Carolina law already expects loads to stay on the truck. G.S. 20-116(g) says no vehicle may be driven on a highway unless it is loaded to prevent any of its load from falling, blowing, dropping, sifting, leaking or otherwise escaping. Trucks over 7,500 pounds carrying rock, gravel or stone must keep the load six inches below the walls and have it securely covered by a tarpaulin or other covering. The law exists because loose stone is a road hazard.

Even so, a construction corridor sees more of it: gravel at the edges of temporary lanes, traffic bunched close behind trucks, and the occasional stone that nobody can trace. A chip from a stone is usually a comprehensive insurance claim on your own policy rather than a claim against a truck you cannot identify.

Windshield repair in Dunn, or a replacement?

A lot of people searching for windshield repair in Dunn, NC find that a chip can still be fixed. ROLAGS, the repair standard, treats stone breaks up to two inches across and single line cracks up to 14 inches as repairable, and Impex’s own guide is that damage which is small, shallow and away from the edges may be repaired. Rules of thumb are a chip smaller than a quarter or damage smaller than a dollar bill.

A replacement is the right call when the crack has reached the edge of the glass, when the damage is in the driver’s direct line of sight, when there are several breaks, or when the damage is in the area the forward camera looks through. Tell us the size and position when you call, or send a photo, and we will say which it looks like before anyone drives out.

How the replacement is done at your vehicle

  1. The glass is matched by VIN. Impex checks the part against your vehicle so the windshield has the right brackets, sensor mounts and tint band.
  2. The vehicle is protected. Hood, dash and seats near the glass are covered.
  3. Trim and wipers come off. The cowl, wipers, mirror and any sensor covers are removed.
  4. The old windshield is cut out. The urethane bond is cut and the glass lifted away.
  5. The frame is prepared. The old urethane is trimmed and the bonding surface prepared for the new bead.
  6. The new windshield is set. Fresh urethane is laid and the glass set and pressed into place.
  7. Everything goes back on. Mirror, sensors, cowl and wipers are refitted and tested.
  8. Calibration and drive-away. The forward camera is calibrated if your vehicle needs it, and you are told when you can drive.

Impex says a windshield replacement takes about one hour, plus a short curing period, and most cars are back on the road within two hours. For the first 24 hours, avoid washing the car and avoid slamming the doors, which pushes air against glass that is still bonding.

Why the forward camera may need calibrating

Many vehicles on I-95 now rely on a camera behind the mirror for lane departure warning, collision braking and adaptive cruise control. I-CAR lists removing the windshield as one of the events that may require that camera to be aimed again. A camera a little off can misread lane lines, which matters most in a work zone where the lines move.

Impex says it performs ADAS calibration on site immediately after windshield replacement, with static and dynamic calibrations completed in one visit, in between 30 minutes and 2 hours. Static calibration uses targets set in front of the parked vehicle; dynamic calibration has the vehicle driven at a set speed on suitable roads, clear of rain and heavy traffic.

Is a cracked windshield an inspection problem in Harnett County?

North Carolina’s safety inspection is the same in Dunn as anywhere in the state. Under G.S. 20-183.3 it checks brakes, lights, horn, steering, windshield wipers, directional signals, tires, mirrors and emissions equipment. The windshield glass itself is not on that list, and no NC statute or inspection rule sets a crack size. The wipers must work under G.S. 20-127(a), and blades or arms that are missing parts or damaged are a reason for an inspector to reject them. Safety glass is required in every windshield, window and door under G.S. 20-135.

None of that makes a long crack safe. The Auto Glass Safety Council describes the windshield as part of the passenger restraint system: it has to be installed properly for the airbags to deploy safely, and it helps keep occupants in the vehicle. A crack weakens it, and a crack in your line of sight on a fast work-zone lane is a problem whatever the inspection list says.

What to have ready when you call from Dunn

  • The vehicle’s year, make and model, and the VIN from the dash or the driver’s door frame
  • Where the damage is and roughly how big, with a photo if you can take one
  • Whether there is a camera behind the mirror, a rain sensor or a heads-up display
  • Your insurer and claim number, if you are claiming
  • Where in Dunn, Erwin, Wade or Godwin the vehicle will be, and whether there is cover if rain is due

Paying for a windshield in Harnett County

A windshield cracked by a stone is normally covered under comprehensive, which the NC Department of Insurance says pays less any deductible. North Carolina has no law that waives the deductible for glass, though some policies include full glass coverage. Under G.S. 58-3-180 you choose who replaces the glass, and the insurer pays the same amount whichever shop you pick. A comprehensive glass claim adds no Safe Driver Incentive Plan points, though insurers may look at how often you claim.

Impex works with all major insurance providers. If your insurer is USAA, our USAA windshield replacement page explains how that glass claim usually runs and where your choice of shop comes in. Impex does not publish prices, but says its quotes are fully inclusive, with no hidden fees, delivery charges, fuel fees or disposal fees.

Questions people ask

Do you replace windshields in Dunn and Erwin?

Yes. Impex Auto Glass works as a mobile service in Dunn, Erwin, Wade and Godwin, replacing the windshield where the vehicle is parked.

Can a chip from the I-95 work zone be repaired?

Often, if it is small, shallow and away from the edges. ROLAGS treats stone breaks up to two inches as repairable. Get it looked at before it spreads.

Who pays if a truck threw the stone?

NC law requires covered loads, but proving which truck threw a stone is hard. Most drivers claim under their own comprehensive coverage, less the deductible.

How long until I can drive after a new windshield?

Impex says most cars are back on the road within two hours. Avoid car washes and slamming doors for 24 hours.

Will I need camera calibration after the windshield?

If your vehicle has a camera behind the mirror for lane keeping or automatic braking, probably. I-CAR lists windshield removal as an event that may require it. Impex calibrates on site after the replacement.
